ULI Sacramento’s Sustainability Council Presents: From Vision to Reality: University Think-Tanks Offer Realistic Solutions to Implement AB32 & SB375
The AB 32 and SB 375 are legislative facts in California, with broad-reaching implications for real estate development. How will these complex and far-reaching mandates be implemented? What impact will the pursuit of sustainability goals have on the economic reality of development? University-based think tanks may have many of the answers.
Existing Metropolitan Planning Organizations (such as SACOG) are required by the legislation to lead implementation of these ill-defined policies, yet these MPO’s have no actual authority over local land use decisions. Additional state policies will be required to support coordinated regional efforts, if these efficiency mandates are to succeed. Research-based strategies emerging in academia may play a critically important role in defining sensible, effective real-world actions at the state, regional and local levels to achieve sustainability mandates.
Across the country university-based think tanks are interpreting mandates and exploring actions that can be undertaken by private and public players striving to meet sustainability goals.
