Dreyfuss & Blackford Receives AIACC Firm Award!

2013 Firm Award_web_750w

The Chapter is excited to share that the American Institute of Architects California Council (AIACC) has selected Dreyfuss & Blackford Architects to receive the 2013 Firm Award. This is the first time a Sacramento firm has been selected.

The Firm Award is the highest honor the AIACC can bestow on an architectural practice. It recognizes firms that have consistently produced distinguished architecture for a period of at least 10 years. Equally important, the award also recognizes mentoring, collaboration among individuals, and significant contributions made to the profession in areas of design, research, planning, technology and practice.

As many of your know, the firm has designed regional landmarks including the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) Headquarters building (listed on the National Register of Historic Places); CalPERS Lincoln Plaza Headquarters (winner of numerous awards including an AIACC Honor Award); and the California Emergency Management Agency Headquarters.

They have also produced significant planning projects throughout Northern California, including campus master plans (CSU Sacramento, CSU Fresno, CHP Academy), Airport master plans (San Francisco, Sacramento), and numerous judicial and civic center plans. They recently completed a new headquarters complex for California ISO, the entity that manages the State’s high-voltage electrical grid. Work currently on the boards includes the Powerhouse Science Center and the Yolo County Courthouse.

Congratulations Dreyfuss & Blackford!

Sustainability by the People Forum

Dreyfuss & Blackford Architects and HOK, in association with AIA, IIDA & IFMA present:

Sustainability BY THE PEOPLE: A Forum on Post-Occupancy Education
How occupant education programs can benefit operations, efficiency and the bottom line.

Building performance and sustainability hinge on occupant understanding and engagement. While post-occupancy evaluation helps the architect and owner understand the success of the building from the occupant’s perspective, is the occupant using the building as the design intended?

Can an educated occupant interact with their built environment more effectively if they understand the intent of the design?

Post-occupancy education is about informing the occupants of buildings about the features and functions of the design intent of the spaces they occupy. Sharing information about the performance of the building expands awareness and guides building owners and users as they operate in their spaces.

Join industry leaders to consider the benefits of occupant education programs. A moderated discussion with audience participation will introduce real-world case-study data from recently completed projects and will cover the issues from the different perspectives, including architecture, ownership, management and research.

PLEATING Blurs the Lines Between Architecture, Art and Fashion

<Pleating> is now on view at the AIACV chapter gallery. We welcome you to stop by and take a look!

This architectural installation was designed and fabricated by Dreyfuss & Blackford Architects exclusively for the Launch 2011 event.

The installation formed a wall around the main stage and acted as a backdrop for the fashion shows and musical acts. Drawing inspiration directly from the fashion arts and using a familiar folding technique at an unfamiliar scale, the installation blurs the lines between architecture, art and fashion.

Want to take a look? The Chapter office is open Monday – Thursday, 9am – 5pm.  A caveat: the gallery space is frequently utilized for meetings and the Chapter office does close for lunch on occasion.  Feel free to call and check on access if you wish: 916-444-3658.

Our thanks for Dreyfuss & Blackford and especially Jason Silva, AIA, for bringing this unique installation to the Chapter.

Does your firm have an interesting display or art exhibit? Let us know!
