AIACV Silver Sponsor: Dr. Kit Miyamoto is appointed Seismic Safety Commissioner by Governor Brown

“H. Kit Miyamoto Ph.D., S.E., often comes to face with death, emotional devastation, cholera, hurricanes, earthquake aftershocks and an array of dangerous situations —all in the name of his personal mission: to save the world.”  ZweigWhite

The year 2011 was a busy one for Dr. Kit Miyamoto, CEO and president of Miyamoto International. In April, Miyamoto kicked off Miyamoto Global Disaster Relief, a non-profit dedicated to saving lives through engineering, which Kit had conceived, founded and created. In August, Kit was appointed to the California Seismic Safety Commission by Governor Jerry Brown, and in October, he was awarded the prestigious Jerry Allen Courage in Leadership Award by ZweigWhite.

A Seismic Safety Commissioner assists the sitting administration and policymakers in investigating earthquakes, researching earthquake-related issues, and recommending policies and programs designed to reduce earthquake risk in California. Learn more about Kit and his appointment.

The Jerry Allen Courage in Leadership Award is given annually to a person who uniquely demonstrates courage in leadership. This is certainly true of Kit, who has consistently demonstrated his global vision and compelling leadership in the field of earthquake and structural engineering. Learn more about the award and Kit’s accomplishments.

Sales Tax Rate to Drop July 1st

Effective July 1, 2011, the combined statewide sales and use tax rate will decrease from 8.25% to 7.25%. The temporary 1% increase implemented in April 2009 expires June 30, 2011. (California SBE Tax Information Bulletin 388, 06/01/2011)

District taxes will still applicable, so the tax rates in most areas of California will be greater than 7.25%. For a list of rates as of April 1, 2011, click here.

Governor Brown is working on a rate increase that may go through in the latter part of this year. So remind your business clients to reprogram their cash registers to charge the lower sales tax beginning July 1st.

On-Line CALGreen Classes

Beginning January 1, 2011, all newly constructed residential, commercial, school and hospital buildings must comply with California’s new Green Building Code.  The AIA California Council is offering online courses to help members of the design and construction industry get up speed on both the code requirements and implementation tactics, providing real world strategies to comply with the mandatory provisions of CALGreen.

These three courses are designed as convenient learning opportunities that serve to expand the professional knowledge of practitioners. And, as a bonus, these courses allow participants to earn up to four AIA/CES HSW/SD learning units.

The courses range from $25-40. Visit www.aiacc.org for more information or to access the courses.
