It’s not too late to sign up for The Chapter’s annual Golf and Tennis Tournament scheduled for Friday, June 22th, 2012!
We are excited to be back at the beautiful Cameron Park Country Club for golf. Tennis will be held at Broadstone Racquet Club in Folsom again this year.

Our annual tournament was wildly successful last year and rated as the “best ever” by AIACV members. We’re looking to make this year even better!

To register (or sponsor) click here for an event flyer.

For those interested in sponsoring…the tournament provides a unique opportunity to spend an entire day with Chapter members and others in the design community, relaxing and networking.  Today, personal contact is more important than ever!

Here are a few ideas to consider:

-          New this year: sponsor an AIACV member’s golf play and play at the member price.

-          Become an on-course sponsor. You and/or your staff can provide food/drink, a giveaway item with your company logo or business card or plan a fun contest right on the course!

-          Provide a small item for our tee prize bags, along with a message or logo identifying  your product or service. Participants in the tournament keep and use these items long after the event has passed.

Historically this tournament sells out, so don’t hesitate ~ sign up today!

Community Event: Practical Applications for Green Roofs & Walls

Interest in green roofs and green walls is growing, and designers are increasingly incorporating them into their projects to reduce storm water runoff, improve energy efficiency, gain LEED points and create habitat. The benefits of green roofs and walls are well documented and easily understood, but how do you actually build them, and what components and materials are needed to get the job done?

Learn the basics of green roof and green wall design, from material and vendor selection to plant and growing medium considerations. Examine green roof and green wall systems for an in-depth understanding of the components and products utilized, as well as the applicable terminology. Construction details, specifications, growing medium blends and plant lists from real projects will provide you with practical knowledge that can be used at the drafting table and out in the field. Participate in hands-on activities to help build a living structure and walk away with a thorough understanding of the major design principles, products and tools to create a green roof or green wall.

Instructor(s):

Haven Kiers, M.L.A., is an instructor for the nonprofit organization Green Roofs for Healthy Cities. She has a green roof consulting firm in Davis, Calif., and is currently designing the green roof for a residential property in San Francisco. NCARB Announces Special Fee Waiver for May 2012

The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) is offering a special, one-time deal during May 2012 that waives any outstanding Certificate renewal fees from prior years.

This means if an inactive Certificate holder reactivates his or her Certificate during May, the only cost will be the current $225 renewal fee plus the $250 reactivation fee. NCARB will be promoting this offer during the month of May through a “Welcome Back to NCARB” e-mail campaign.

“We understand the current economy has been tough for many in our profession, and may have influenced decisions to allow an NCARB Certificate to go inactive,” said NCARB CEO Michael J. Armstrong, “so we hope this fee adjustment will encourage architects to come back to NCARB and get the competitive edge, faster reciprocity, and mobility that certification affords.”

NCARB has also adjusted its fee schedule by implementing a new reactivation policy that effectively lowers fees for architects seeking to renew an inactive NCARB Record. Effective April 2012, reactivating a Record that has lapsed will require a $225 renewal fee for each year of inactivity, plus the reactivation fee, up to a cap of $1,500. Previously there was no fee cap, so depending on how long an individual’s Record has lapsed, this change could equate to hundreds of dollars in savings for those who reactivate.
